 AF 4.1

Standard AF1.4: Solve two step equations and inequalities in one variable over the rational numbers, interpret the solution or solutions in the context from which they arose, and verify the reasonable of the results.

Student Friendly Language:To us this means that we can solve for a variable in an inequality problem.  This also means that we can solve for x or any variable such as in 24x+3=27(a linear equation).

 Inequality Example

4x+2<34                                   The first thing that we do is write out the problem.

4x+2<34                                   Then, we add negative two or subtract two from thirty                                -2  -2                                    -four and two(what we do to one side, we have to do                                                                            to other).

4x<32                                      Now we have four x is less than thirty-two.The next

4    4                                        thing that we do is divide by four.

x<8                                       When you are done with the division, your final answer

should be, x is less than eight. Notice that we don't

switch the inequality sign because we are not dividing

or multiplying by a negative numer.

Linear Equation Example

12a-3=33                                      The first thing that we do is  add the opposite(change all of the

                                                              subtraction into addition).

12a+(-3)=33                                  Then, we add three to both sides because what we do to one

+3  +3                                  side, we have to do to the other.

12a=36                                         We now divide by twelve so we can isolate a.

          12    12

a=3                                              This gives us our final answer, which should be three.
