Exemplar: Find the value of y.
-24 - 109y = -1441 Write original problem.
-24 + -109y = -1441 Change all subtraction to addition by adding the opposite.
-24 + -109y = -1441 Add 24 to both sides to get -109y by itself. Add 24 to -1441.
+24 +24
-109y = -1417
-24 + -109y = -1441 Divide both sides by -109 so that y cancels and you get a answer of y = 13.
+24 +24
-109y= -1441
-109 -109
y=13
