Group 3's MG 1.3

Standard MG 1.3 Use measures expressed as rates (e.g., speed, density) and measures expressed as products (e.g., person-days) to solve problems; check the units of the solutions; and use dimensional analysis to check the reasonableness of the answer.

Student Friendly Language

To us this standard means that we can find out the time it took something to travel, how fast something it is traveling, and  how far it traveled(the length).  It also means that we can find out the density of an object(for this we need to know the formula for density;mass/volume). The last thing that we need to know is what units we need to use for the final answer.

Example #1

Michael was driving from California to New York.  He was driving

at a rate of sixty miles/hr.  He traveled a total distance of one

thousand two-hundred miles.  How much time did it take Michael to get to

New York?

r=60 mi./hr.                                                               The first thing that we do is write out what           d=1,200mi.                                                                we know.

          1,200 mi./60 mi./hr.                                                   Then we divide 60 into 1,200.(We  divide

60 into 1,200 by using the formula t=d/s)

          1,200 mi./60 mi./hr.                                                     When we divide 1,200 mi. by 60 mi./hr.,

                                                                                               the miles cross out.

1,200/60 hr.=20 hr.                                                       Your final answer should be 20

                                                                                                hours.
